January 15, 2009

It is interesting that Scripture serves as God’s Word to us…this is interesting because in the midst of those words to us there exists a series of poems and songs that serve as our words to God…it is interesting that such a large portion of God’s Word to us would be about our words to God.

The section of Scripture I am referring to is the Psalter. For me the Psalms have a way of cutting right to the core of my human experience at its best and at its worst. I have found no greater words of praise, no deeper sense of repentance, no better model of gratitude.

With that said, I thought that we could do what our forbearers of faith have done for centuries…I thought that from now until the last day before Lent begins, we would endeavor to pray the psalms together. Now obviously we won’t get to them all before Lent begins, but it is my hope that we can continue this endeavor in our own corporate and individual prayer lives.

Enough said, here is our Psalm and our prayer for today:

Psalm 1:1-6
Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Amen.
